Homework Assignment { A Frenchman For The Night }

 Dear Students,sunshine of my lifeSun:

The topic for week 10's class is as described below.

"A Frenchman For The Night"

Please come to class prepared to tell me the meanings of the words and phrases I have underlined and the meaning of the song. I will also ask you questions about how this song effects your life or how it may effect your life in the future. One of the questions I WILL ask you for this lesson is as follows " If you could be any nationality EXCEPT Chinese for 1 week which nationality would you choose and why?" Please prepare carefully for this question and give detailed specific answers. As usual I will also ask other questions regarding this lesson. Please consider this carefully and be prepared to "think on your feet." Please make sure to either copy or write down the lyrics and bring them to class. I will play the song for you.I will now give you a little hint. Many American songs have deep hidden meaning. A lot of metaphor will be used. This song has a very deep meaning but it is not hidden. It is right on the surface. This is NOT a difficult assignment. Please do NOT make it any more difficult on yourselves than it needs to be.

The goal of this lesson is threefold.:

1: To help you learn some new vocabulary.
2: To help you understand how people's life experiences effect the culture in the form of music in this case but also literature , art , food , architecture etc etc.
3: To impart some practical real life knowledge based upon experience.

 " A Frenchman For The Night "

 By Jimmy Buffett

  From his driftwood castle
Comes a song I've heard before
A scratchy gramophone cuts to the bone
"La Vie En Rose" arpeggios
So the dream begins
And the song is amplified
Buy the Beaujolais, on Bastille day
He dances in the tide

By the light of the moon
He's a Frenchman for the night
By the light of the moon
It'll be all right

Well it takes him back
To the days of love and war
And the girl he knew with eyes of blue
Waiting on the shore
If he'd only known
How the years would fly on by
Such a simple crime, he's run out of time
So he reaches for the sky

By the light of the moon
He's a Frenchman for the night
By the light of the moon
It'll be all right

Blame it on the Champs Elysees
Blame it on a tune
Blame it on the stroke of Monet
But you can't escape the moon

He sees the stars above
As the floor to heavens light
While the angels taunt "C'est une nuit blanche"
He's a Frenchman for the night

By the light of the moon
He's a Frenchman for the night
By the light of the moon
It'll be all right

From a driftwood castle
Comes a song I've heard before
A scrat chy gramophone cuts to the bone

" Off To See The Lizard  "

By Jimmy Buffett                                                                                         I was raised by a maid who came from Martinique
She wore geckos round her neck and bracelets on her feet
A superstitious woman from the land of sugar cane
She'd sing the sun to bed and dance out in the rain
Dance out dance out dance out dance out in the rain

She'd excite us with his legend that the
Africans had told
About a red iguana who turned lava into gold
We'd mount an expedition headin' out into the bay
Superstitious children playing pirate for a day

CHORUS

Off to see the lizard
Off to see the lizard
Deja deja deja vu, believe it
And it will come true
Veja Veja Veja du
What works for me might work for you

Bein' rich and famous seems to have its ups and downs
That's the price you pay for being troubadours
and clowns
Godzilla's halitosis it be vaporizing cars
Elvis up in Michigan or maybe out on Mars
Dance out dance out dance out to the stars

But livin' in the briar patch ain't what it appears
Sooner or later you gotta face your fears
I heard it from the parrot verbalizing in the tree
I heard it in the song lines of the aborigine

Off the see the lizard
Off the see the lizard
Deja deja deja vu, believe it
And it will come true
Veja veja veja du
What works for me might work for you

Does it work for me?
Yeah yeah
Will it work for you?
Yeah yeah
If you believe it will
Yeah yeah
It will come true

I got problems with my brain underneath my curls
Problems wif Loraine and all the other girls
Love a wealthy woman and the pretty plane she flies
If you think this songs confusing you should see it through my eyes
Dancin, dancin, dancin through my eyes

I'm turning off the waterfall the tourists can go home
Feel it time to travel time to write a poem
Time to seek some therapy I'm goin' walkabout
Answers are the easy part questions raise the doubt

Off the see the lizard
Off to see the lizard
Deja deja deja vu, believe it
And it will come true
Veja veja veja du
What works for me might work for you

Deja deja deja vu, believe it
And it will come true
Veja veja veja du
What works for me might work for you tai Pictures, Images and Photos

Eye Of The Tiger by The Scorpions

Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

[Chorus:]
It's the eye of the tiger, it's
the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds, still we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

[Chorus]

Risin' up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

[Chorus]

The eye of the tiger
[Repeats to fade out]

One Particular Harbour
----------------------
by Jimmy Buffett

Ia ora te natura
E mea arofa teie ao nei
Ia ora te natura
E mea arofa teie ao nei
I know I don't get there often enough
But God knows I surely try
I'ts a magic kind of medicine
That no doctor could prescribe
I used to rule my world from a pay phone
And ships out on the sea
But now times are rough
And I got too much stuff
Can't explain the likes of me
But there's this one particular harbour
So far but yet so near
Where I see the days as they fade away
And finally disappear
But now I think about the good times
Down in the Caribbean sunshine
In my younger days I was so bad
Laughin' about all the fun we had
I've seen enough to feel the world spin
Mixin' different oceans meetin' cousins
Listen to the drummers and the night sounds
Listen to the singers make the world go round
Ia ora te natura...
Lakes below the mountains
Flow into the sea
Like oils applied to canvas
They permeate through me
And there's that one particular harbour
Sheltered from the wind
Where the children play on the shore each day
And all are safe within
Most mysterious calling harbour
So far but yet so near
I can see the day when my hair's full gray
And I finally disappear
Ia ora te natura...
Ua pau te maitai no te fenua
Te zai noa ra te ora o te mitie

Please be advised that some of this song is written in Portuguese. If you don't understand some words that is probably why. Just concentrate on the English words.

Have fun
